A Hustle for Life: Refugees in the Media

A Hustle for Life: Refugees in the Media

Now turn to page 6 and read A Hustle for Life: Refugees in the Media. When you have read the article, complete the following tasks:

1) What examples of different representations of refugees in the media are offered in the article?

  • Refugees labelled as migrants to create the impression that they are travelling by choice rather than to flee genuine disaster.

  • Represented as a swarm, horde or tide marauding and invading their way across the world.

  • Representations of refugees create an image in reader's minds that refugees are a dangerous and threatening mass.

2) In your opinion, is the documentary genre more or less biased than the news media? What examples can you provide from the article to support your view?

I consider that the documentary genre is much less biased than news media due to the fact it could 'correct overwhelmingly bad representations elsewhere in the media'. An example from the article is the BBC documentary 'The Refugee Camp: Our desert home' which shows the disaster from each viewpoints: One perspective is from the point of view of the presenter and her group and the second perspective is from the angle of the people that are living within the camp in Zaatari that has slowly grown right into a small town.
3) How could you apply the post-colonial theories we have learned in class to the representation of refugees in the media?

Alvarado: The concept of 'Pitied' is reinforced as people of the eastern lifestyle and society are seeking out help from the west they're reliant on different countries to take them in as they get away from conflict.

Fanon: The factor of 'Essentialize' is challenged when you consider that those from the East aren't all of the same; even as a few have chosen to include themselves within the conflict other innocent individuals are escaping the war.

Said: This concept is reinforced because the manner in which the East is represented within the Western mass media indicates a clear division among the West and the East. The media reviews the East as the harmful, distinct and uncivilized human beings that said proposes as opposed to equalling focusing on the harmless individuals who are looking to escape the conflict.
