Social Media and Black Identity

1) List three theorists discussed in the article and what they believe regarding black identity.

Aisha Harris: Claims that social media acts as a negative part within the introduction of black identities. Harris considers that fast development of social media has fashioned a lifestyle where black identities are victims to a path of 'Memeification' in which their photo turns into a decontextualized web meme.

Giddens: Argues that social media could be a platform for creation of positive black identities.

Henry Jenkins: Argues that social media is an space in which 'Participatory Cultures' may be identifiedonline, interest-driven networks that permit fans to imaginatively channel the capabilities they gain on the web into political activism & voicing marginalized opinions.

2) In your opinion, is social media a positive or negative force when it comes to issues of black identity?

I believe that the creation of social media platforms on the internet is benifiting balck identities due to the fact is anything was to be used to target them they could easily voice their opinions and concerns of the subject matter. When it comes to racism the media needs to be careful of what they post and share online because the response from this could damage their reputation.
3) How could you apply the post-colonial theories we have learned in class to the issue of social media and black identity?

Alvarado: The factor of 'dangerous' is strengthened via the representation of the black population and identity within the digital world, as, quickly as we study some thing about a certain area we immediately associate the area to being led through the black community and take in that they're worried in what we pay attention on the news like shootings.

Fanon: The points of 'Decivilize' and 'Essentialize' are strengthened on the subject of the trouble of social media

Said: The problems of social media and the black community may be connected to said's concept due to the fact even though being a part of the Western culture the black community are divided from the rest of the Western culture. They arevfurther down then the entire of the Western world whilst represented on social media.
