Applying Feminism

Briefly list or describe the different waves of feminism.

Feminism is the advocacy of women's rights on the ground of the equality of the sexes. It is categorised in three different waves and stages of its timeline. The first wave of feminism was thought to be made during the early 1900's. it was the time where the difference between men and women was established and the fight for equality started. This wave created for the fight for legal inequality. For example the right to vote for women, this was reinforced by suffragettes. The second wave was mainly related to the women's liberation movement which started in the early 1960's. although women had the right to vote in the 60's there was still many equality issues that this wave was targeting. Some of which were roles and pay at work place. Finally, the third wave was
Third Wave began in the 1980s and continues to the present day. negativeness stereotypes of women, their right to control their own sexuality (including how they dress) and reproductive issues such as abortion and the availability of contraception.

The factsheet doesn't mention a fourth wave of feminism. Do you think we are currently in a fourth wave of feminism due to digital media?

We are in a fourth wave because of the possiblities and opportunity people have to prome the feminist agenda and create equality.
People can now voice their opinions about the inequality in society when it comes to gender.
People can use social media as a means to promote their agendas - create campaign like the SlutWalk
Victims of sexual harrasment can come public with their horrible stories
Inequality in society can be exposed easily

List the five different types of feminism with a one-sentence definition for each.

Radical feminism - Radical feminism is a perspective within feminism that calls for a radical reordering of society in which male supremacy is eliminated in all social and economic contexts.

Liberal feminism - Liberal feminism is an individualistic form of feminist theory, which focuses on women's ability to maintain their equality through their own actions and choices. Its emphasis is on making the legal and political rights of women equal to men.

Marxist-Feminism - Marxist feminism is feminism focused on investigating and explaining the ways in which women are oppressed through systems of capitalism and private property.

Black Feminism - Black feminism is a school of thought stating that sexism, class oppression, gender identity and racism are inextricably bound together.

Postmodern Feminism - Postmodern feminism is an approach to feminist theory that incorporates postmodern and post-structuralist theory, seeing itself as moving beyond the modernist polarities of liberal feminism and radical feminism.

This type of feminism is associated with third wave feminists.
It acknowledges the diversity amongst women and encourages individual women to find feminist ideas that combine with their own experiences of life to create a brand of feminism suitable for them.

Summarise Laura Mulvey's analysis of Hollywood film.

Mulvey pointed out that the cinematography of classic Hollywood films usually objectifies women

What does Jean Kilbourne argue regarding advertising and the impact on women?

Jean Kilbourne claims that the advertising industry  tries to make a women’s appearance the most important thing about her.

Summarise Naomi Wolf's theory of 'The Beauty Myth'.

Naomi Wolf claims that the notion of ‘beauty’ is entirely socially constructed and patriarchal.
Men set and create rules of what can be considered as beautiful in women
This is different in different cultures.

To conclude feminism, do you believe than men and women are basically equal now or is there still a need for feminist movements?

I believe that men and women are not equal at this present day however the way society is changing, it is inevitable that the circumstance will come into fruition. Cultures play a major factor in the inequality due to how traditionalist mindset differs from the norm of society. When there is an appreciation for women, then the theory that women and men being equal would hold a serious case.
